  3.                     FAITH IS A GIFT  FROM GOD
  4.  
  5. INTRODUCTION
  6. It is essential that God's people learn to live by faith.  The
  7. scripture is explicit that without faith it is impossible to please
  8. God, Every approach we make to God and every action of our lives
  9. must be on the basis of faith.  Heb. 11:6, Rom.  14:23.  There is
  10. no room for a spiritual life built on a foundation of human effort
  11. or good works.  The just live by faith (Rom. 1:17) and anything
  12. other than this is a return to bondage (Gal. 5:1).  It is faith
  13. which gives us victory over the world - 1 John 5:4.

  15. The Early Church faced great challenges in the area of faith and
  16. it is not surprising that this is still so.  Satan knows that if
  17. God's people discover the tremendous power of faith in God, their
  18. lives and ministries will be revolutionised.
  19.  
  20. Hebrews 11:33 declares that the Old Testament saints "through faith
  21. obtained promises", and it is clear John 14:14 1:5:7-8  that
  22. Promise-obtainers glorify God.  Many people are "prisoners of hope"
  23. (Zech. 9:12 ), and have never learned to express true faith, and
  24. receive God's blessings.

  26. Today much confusion exists regarding the exercise of faith. many
  27. people get frustrated because they see little result from their
  28. attempts to believe God.  This has resulted in a backlash of
  29. negativity in the Church, or the manifestation of cold and
  30. deliberate unbelief.

  32. On the other hand, there is considerable false teaching on faith
  33. which has caused much presumption.
  34.  
  35. This series of studies on the Principles of Faith will seek to
  36. impart a tried and tested, and balanced perspective of this vital
  37. Christian attribute.

  39. Faith is a Gift from God, and in considering this basic aspect of
  40. faith there are a number of observations to be made.
  41.  
  42. 1-   FATTH IS NOT NATURAL TO MAN
  43.  
  44.      There are numerous things which look like faith, and may be
  45.      confused with it.  There are substitutes for real faith which
  46.      are really humanistic.  That is, they are man generated and do
  47.      not need God in order to achieve their end.  The Bible makes
  48.      it clear that God gives faith to man (Rom. 12: 3.) and the
  49.      fact that the unregenerate man does not have true faith is
  50.      also emphasised by 2 Thess. 3:2, "all men have not faith". 
  51.      Only the converted receive faith from God and anything else,
  52.      regardless of how dynamic it may appear, is not the quality
  53.      which the Bible calls faith.  Mind over matter, mental
  54.      exercise, auto-suggestion, positive thinking, good feelings or
  55.      other such techniques are not faith but psuedo-faith.

  57. 2.   VARIOUS KINDS OF FAITH
  58.  
  59.      There are basically four types of faith.
  60.  
  61.      a)   Natural Faith, Faith of a purely rational nature based on
  62.           experience and factual knowledge.  Without it no farmer
  63.           could plant seed (James 5:7).. This faith is actually a
  64.           process of logical reasoning.
  65.  
  66.           It is this element which is generated by the natural man
  67.           to accomplish many oustanding things - the soaring vision
  68.           of the architect, the success and financial empires of
  69.           the business tycoon, the discoveries of the inventor, the
  70.           courage of the intrepid explorer, etc.  The kind of faith
  71.           is often confused with true faith because of its apparent
  72.           achievement - including the ability to transform a weak
  73.           and negative or unsuccessful person.

  75.           However the motive power of this type of faith is the
  76.           mind and not the spirit. it is a product of the soul life
  77.           of man and is common to the believer and unbeliever.  The
  78.           power of positive thinking is an ability the natural man
  79.           can develop apart from God and is therefore not a
  80.           spiritual quality.

  82.           It has no ability totransform the  nature  of  man,  or 
  83.           provide a basis for fellowship with God. while it is not
  84.           evil, and has a very necessary function to perform in our
  85.           lives, it must never be allowed to become a substitute
  86.           for true faith.

  88.      b)   Spiritual faith.  The second type of faith is often
  89.           called "saving faith". It is a gift of God and is
  90.           imparted to the repentant sinner at the moment of
  91.           conversion.  Eph. 2:8-9.  It is a supernatural ability to
  92.           believe what natural faith cannot or will not believe. 1
  93.           Cor. 1:18-24, Rom. 1:16-22.  It goes beyond the logical
  94.           process of the mind to grasp and trust what cannot be
  95.           perceived except by the spirit of man.  This is the kind
  96.           of faith which the Christian lives by.  This "ordinary"
  97.           level of faith is imparted to every repentant sinner and
  98.           is the foundation of our whole Christian life and true
  99.           fellowship with God.  Rom. 1:17, Heb. 11:6.  This kind of
  100.           faith is allied to two other types of faith to make an
  101.           unbreakable bond of supernatural ability.  These two
  102.           categories of faith are faith-.the fruit of the spirit
  103.           and faiththe gift of the spirit.

  105.      c)   Faith - the fruit of the Spirit - Gal. 5:22.  This kind
  106.           of faith can be more correctly understood as
  107.           "faithfulness" (RSV) or "fidelity" (NEB).  It is both the
  108.           product of spiritual faith and the support of it.  While
  109.           it is possible to develop and use spiritual faith without
  110.           faithfulness, it will inevitably be flawed.  This kind of
  111.           faith is expressed in character and conduct and is that
  112.           part of spiritual faith which concentrates on the
  113.           development of progressive sanctification in the
  114.           believer.

  116.      d)   Faith - the gift of the-Spirit I Cor. 12:9.  This is a
  117.           special impartation by the Holy Spirit of a supernatural
  118.           ability to_suspend or trascend natural laws. it
  119.           impregnates the believer with ability to operate in the
  120.           realm of special types of miracles.  The kind of faith is
  121.           occasional and is dependent on the initiative of the Holy
  122.           Spirit - 1 Cor. 12:11.

  124.           it is really a supernatural amplification of the faculty
  125.           of spiritual faith.

  132. 3.   HOW WE RECEIVE FAITH FROM GOD
  133.  
  134.      God gives us His faith to live by (Rom. 1:17, 12:3) and this
  135.      fantastic quality
  136.      is imparted lo us in the instant of conversion.  Faith to be
  137.      saved, like repentance, is a gift of God (Acts ll:18, Eph.
  138.      2:8,9).  Salvation is not the adoption of a concept or
  139.      culture.  It is the reception of a person, and not an
  140.      intangible idea or feeling. eg, Luke 19:9 - Jesus said to
  141.      Zacchaeus.  "This day is salvation come to your house". 
  142.      However it was the person of the saviour who had come.
  143.  
  144.      Note John 1:12, and Gal. 4:19.

  146.      In the  moment of conversion we avail ourselves of both a
  147.      divinely imparted ability to repent and believe coincidental
  148.      with the decinion to receive Jesus as the Lord of our life. in
  149.      receiving Him we receive all that is in Him.

  151.      Col. 2:10 (LB) says "So you have everything when you have
  152.      Christ".  Col. 2:2 (LB) also says, "God's secret plan now at
  153.      last made known, is Christ Himself" In Him live all the hidden
  154.      and the mighty untapped treasures of wisdom and knowledge".

  156.      Gal. 2:l6 and 20 clearly shows us that the faith we are living
  157.      by is not our self-generated positive attitude, but the very
  158.      faith of Jesus Himself, and not merely our belief about Him. 
  159.      The very fact of receiving Christ incorporates His faith in
  160.      us.  Eph. 1:3; Acts 3:16; 24:24, 26:18; and Gal. 3:7 all
  161.      indicate this same wonderful truth.  Note the comparison of 1
  162.      John 5:4 which states that faith is the victory which
  163.      overcomes the world and John 16:33 in which Jesus said He had
  164.      overcome it.

  166.      There are some very important aspects of this truth which need
  167.      to be clearly grasped in order for that divinely imparted
  168.      faith to be effective.

  170.      a)   When you were born again you received all the faith you
  171.           will ever have.  In other words you will never need more,
  172.           nor receive more, than you already have. The limitless
  173.           ability of Jesus is at work within you - Eph. 3:17 & 20.

  175.           While there may be special manifestations of the "Gift of
  176.           Faith" for special purposes, your spiritual faith cannot
  177.           be increased in quantity.  Since you have Christ you have
  178.           all that is in Him now.

  180.      b)   The expression of that faith cannot increase with
  181.           experience and use.  The more you use it, the stronger it
  182.           becomes.

  184.      c)   The search for faith is destructive because it is an
  185.           expression of unbelief in what we have already received.

  187.      d)   when we confess or acknowledge that we have the faith of
  188.           God (Mk 11:22 - margin) it is released and becomes active
  189.           - Philemon verse 6.

  191.      c)   Faith is now a faculty of the re-born human spirit which
  192.           is united with-the Holy Spirit. 1 Cor. 6:17.  Note Acts
  193.           6:5 and 2 Cor. 4:13
